Attack on Commercial Vessel MV Golden Leo Amidst Russia-Ukraine Conflict

A commercial vessel named MV Golden Leo got attacked while heading out of Ukraine’s Odesa port amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Nine crew members were killed in the incident. Four of those dead were Indian sailors.

The deceased was Akhil Joyan , from Vellarikundu in Kerala's Kasaragod district. He was twenty-six. Things were already complicated for him; he had just gotten engaged a few weeks before this happened and was planning on switching jobs.

Family members told reporters that Akhil had been looking forward to leaving the ship soon. He planned to sign off by the end of the month and move somewhere else in the shipping business.

“Last month, he visited his parents. His wedding was set,” a family source mentioned when speaking to The Indian Express . “He intended to leave this ship by the end of the month. He wanted to move to another firm.”

Akhil had joined the Merchant Navy at nineteen, after finishing nautical science in Chennai. Six years aboard that vessel. Before all that, he was known for being a tug-of-war athlete and held some world records in finger pulling.

The family found out about the tragedy via an email from his employer earlier that day. Details about how this explosion happened? They don't have them yet. They are now talking to the Ministry of External Affairs, and other authorities, trying to get answers.

The MEA stepped in with a statement. They said there were seventeen crew members on board when the attack hit off the coast near Odesa.

“As per what we know,” the ministry said. “Four Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives. One is hospitalized in critical condition.”

There was an immediate condemnation of the attack itself. The government stressed that targeting commercial shipping and putting innocent civilian crew members at risk, or slowing down freedom of navigation and trade that kind of action should be avoided entirely. It’s deplorable.

The whole thing comes right in the middle of ongoing security worries in the Black Sea region. Shipping has always been vulnerable there since things escalated between Russia and Ukraine. This attack just adds another layer to that vulnerability.
