3 Idiots Re-release and Controversy

The plan for 3 Idiots is finally shifting. Aamir Khan’s big birthday film festival gave us a taste of some classics, but one thing was missing: that huge hit. Now it’s coming back.

It’s set for September 4th, 2026. That's the date Bollywood Hungama mentioned, tied to NH Studioz plans after they picked up that whole Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films catalog. It feels like a long wait, almost seventeen years since it first hit the screens. A chance to revisit that coming-of-age drama for everyone.

The cast is still there: Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani. Still some of modern Hindi cinema’s biggest milestones, you know?

But the buzz around it isn't just about the re-release date anymore. Lately, 3 Idiots has been dragged into something much messier this month, connected to Sonam Wangchuk. You see that connection everywhere now.

There was this talk years ago a persistent belief among some folks that Aamir’s character, Rancho, actually drew inspiration from Wangchuk’s work as an education reformer in Ladakh. It became a sort of running thread.

Then things got really heated when Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur, shared something recently. He put out a video backing Sonam Wangchuk and basically claimed that the film was based on him. It caused an uproar. People were talking about it constantly during that hunger strike he was doing.

Aamir Khan finally spoke up himself, sort of shutting down the theory completely. During a Q&A at the BFI, he addressed it. He said he didn't know about Sonam back then when they made the movie. He saw some stuff recently that’s what prompted him to say, "He is wrong."

And he added that neither Rajkumar Hirani nor Abhijat Joshi knew anything about Wangchuk while the film was being written. It wasn’t a simple denial. He talked about Wangchuk’s health too. Right now, it’s nineteen days into his fast at the time. Aamir expressed real concern: "All of us are very concerned for his health and his life. We hope it ends well." Hope that he finishes his fast.

3 Idiots , released back in 2009, is still a massive film. It’s about three engineering students dealing with college chaos, friendship, and the relentless pressure to succeed academically. It just sits there as one of those big Bollywood blockbusters. A huge movie story, regardless of what happens in the background chatter now.
