India's Push for Electric Cooking Stoves and Financing Solutions

India is trying to push for more electric cooking stoves . It’s linked to the fact that the shortage of cooking gas, caused by that West Asia conflict, is really straining households right now, Mint said. People are aware of this development.

The government is looking at a specific model. It involves using multilateral financial institutions to offer zero-interest loans for induction stoves. This would run through the state-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, or EESL .

EESL might revamp the National Efficient Cooking Programme, the one they started back in 2023. The goal is to scale it up fast. It’s about meeting this sharp rise in demand for electric cookstoves. They were just a niche thing before the crisis hit.

Under this proposed setup, someone else would subsidize the interest part of the monthly payments. This is meant to lighten the financial load for the poorer consumers. The current NECP? It doesn't have any interest subsidy built in yet.

EESL is already talking to big players like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. They want to structure the whole program this way. One source mentioned it would be a kind of interest subvention, backed by those institutions.

Once those partnerships sort themselves out, EESL could actually facilitate those zero-interest loans. Think about it: people buy the stoves on an EMI, and the banks or partners just cover the interest cost. The consumers only pay the principal amount.

This whole move is happening because there’s a huge surge in demand for electric cooking solutions. It’s all tied back to those disruptions from the conflict, affecting fuel availability and prices everywhere. It’s a real push now.
